Lou Anne Neill

Lou Anne Neill has been the Principal Harpist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since her appointment by Carlo Maria Giulini in 1983.  Her activities with the Philharmonic have included solo appearances at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and the Hollywood Bowl as well as concerts with the Philharmonic New Music Group and the Chamber Music Society.

She is the co-author of Writing for the Pedal Harp, A Standardized Manual for Composers and Harpists (University of California Press, 1985 (1st edition); Vanderbilt Music Company, 2006 (2nd edition)) and co-producer of To Her Glory: A Tribute to Mother Earth, a five-minute 35mm film inspired by the music of George Frideric Handel and shown in film festivals in Ireland, Spain, Italy, and the U.S.

Lou Anne has been on the faculty of UCLA since 1981.  She has also been on the faculties of UC Santa Barbara and California Institute of the Arts.  From 1997 to 2003, Lou Anne created and maintained “Understanding Music!” – an online website that taught music theory to music students all over the world.  Her degrees include a B.A. and a M.A. in Musicology from UCLA.
