About the Competition

For 55 years, the YMF National Debut Competition has provided talented musicians with solo performances with the Debut Orchestra and the National Orchestra Camp, along with a significant cash prize to further their studies. Current participants and alumni of all YMF’s programs through age 26 are eligible to audition for the annual National Debut Competition.

A panel of professional musicians and the Music Director and Conductor of the Debut Orchestra select young musicians to perform a concerto with the Debut Orchestra during the upcoming season. More than 180 renowned musicians have had their earliest solo experience as a winner of this prestigious competition. Awards include a performance opportunity with the Debut Orchestra and honorariums ranging from $500 to $2,000.

Past winners include internationally-renowned guitarist Christopher Parkening, pianist Misha Dichter, Concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic Glenn Dicterow, Famed cello soloist Nathaniel Rosen, Principal Flute of the Boston Symphony Elizabeth Rowe, and violin soloist Leila Josefowicz.

Eligibility

Instrumentalists and vocalists who are current members or alumni of YMF’s Chamber Music Series, Debut Orchestra, Scholarship and Summer Orchestra Programs through age 26 at the time of auditions. All applications will be screened; submission of an application does not guarantee an audition. Special Notes for Previous Winners:

  • Winners who won while older than 18 may not re-audition.
  • Previous winners who won while under 18 may not compete again until they are over 18.
  • All previous winners must skip a year to reapply if the above restrictions do not exclude them.

Auditions/Applications

Application available January 2011

Applicants must submit a DVD of an entire concerto or solo work from memory. Applicants must audition with an eligible work that is for solo and orchestra. Piano accompaniment on the DVD and at the live auditions is required. Applications and DVDs will be screened by a committee that will invite a limited number of applicants to the live auditions.
