Homeboy Music Heals Program
Homeboy Industries already offers former gang members harmony through hope, training and support. Now, the Young Musicians Foundation is offering them harmony through music. In October 2017, the Mike Stoller and Corky Hale Music Heals Program began at Homeboy Industries in L.A. YMF is providing music instruction in guitar, keyboards, voice, songwriting, drums and percussion.
Until now, Homeboy, one of the most successful gang rehabilitation programs in the country, has never offered a music program. Up to 250 participants in Homeboy's Workforce Development Program are eligible to take the classes, taught by award-winning professional musicians.
Also, Ozz Saturné of T.OZ Entertainment, with YMF, has developed a unique curriculum that interconnects the instrumental, vocal and songwriting instruction with digital music production and recording technology.
The program integrates instrumental instruction and live performance
opportunities that help participants deepen the connection to their inner voice while giving them a way to structure, record and refine their creative expression through cutting-edge music production tools.
We are especially grateful to the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation for providing the resources to incorporate a state-of-the-art keyboard lab.
