Adam Bhatia

At 27 years of age, trumpeter Adam Bhatia has already had great success in many areas of the musical world.  From performing Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No.2 at 16 years of age to playing lead trumpet, Adam has always been considered a diverse and well-rounded trumpet player, and has been noted for playing with “dash and fire” in the International Trumpet Guild Journal.  He has performed with celebrities from Doc Severinsen to Tony Danza and for President George W. Bush.  Mr. Bhatia’s playing has been heard from television and motion pictures to live broadcasts on CBC Radio.  In addition, Adam Bhatia has had a diverse solo career from playing for 50 people at the Beverly Hills Library to performing the National Anthem solo for 35,000 people at Edison Field in Anaheim, California.

Born and raised in Long Beach, California, Mr. Bhatia is currently a Doctoral candidate in Trumpet Performance at UCLA studying with Jen Lindemann. He graduated Magna Cum Laude in June of 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, and received his Master of Music degree in June 2007.  While at UCLA, Mr. Bhatia has held every Principal Trumpet position, won the Stanley Wilson Brass Scholarship five times, was presented the Dean’s Scholarship for Outstanding Performer, and has been a Gluck scholarship performer for seven years having given over 90 concerts with Gluck ensembles and as a soloist.  He was even featured in June 2005 in the UCLA Newspaper chosen as an outstanding student from the entire student body.  His previous teachers include Rob Roy McGregor, Boyde Hood, and Joan LaRue.

Mr. Bhatia was appointed Principal Trumpet of the Debut Orchestra in 2002, and held that position for his entire tenure with the orchestra until 2009.  With this ensemble, he has performed the trumpet solo in John Williams’ Summon the Heroes for John Williams himself, and has even performed the trumpet solo in the Jeopardy theme with Merv Griffin.  In  2005, he was asked to join La Orquesta de Baja California as Principal Trumpet by world-renowned guitarist and music director Sir Angel Romero, and is also a member of the American Youth Symphony.  Mr. Bhatia has also performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and is a member of the Los Angeles Brass Ensemble.

Mr. Bhatia has been a winner of numerous national and international solo competitions.  In 2002, at the age of 19, he won the first prize at the Pasadena Showcase for the Arts Instrumental Competition.  In 2004 at the National Trumpet Competition in Fairfax, Virginia, he was first place winner in the college division.  Also in 2004, he won the Diablo Symphony Orchestra Solo Competition and was invited to perform the Arutunian Concerto at several events in Walnut Creek, California.  After this, Mr. Bhatia was a prizewinner at the 2004 International Trumpet Guild Solo Competition in Denver, Colorado. Quoted from the ITG Journal, “ he came out and launched directly into a striking performance of Peter Maxwell Davies’ Sonata. Performing from memory on a D trumpet, Bhatia played with confidence and excitement, earning a second bow from the appreciative audience.”   In June of 2004, after being chosen winner of the prestigious Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition by Allen Vizzutti, Mr. Bhatia was invited to play for more than 3,500 people at the Yamaha Summer Band Symposium in Normal, Illinois.  With this award has come the honor of a rare featured performance at the 2005 NAMM show in Anaheim. In 2006, he was the winner of the Pasadena Trumpet Competition, and the runner-up of the Ghitalla Award in the Berkshires.  He was also the winner of the International Trumpet Guild Orchestral Competition in New Jersey and runner-up in the Solo Competition. In August of 2008, he traveled to Sienna, Italy and was a finalist in the International Prize Competition.  In 2009, Mr. Bhatia was the Grand Prize Winner of the YMF Debut Orchestra Concerto Competition. Furthermore, Adam Bhatia has been nominated for the celebrated Avery Fisher Career Grant.

Adam Bhatia is currently a freelance trumpet player and soloist based in the Los Angeles area, and maintains a large studio of trumpet students.  Outside of music, he is a competitive scratch golfer and avid car enthusiast.
